Job Description:

Under the immediate or general supervision of a Lead Supervisor or higher; to perform, either alone or within a team, troubleshooting, testing, repair, replacement, calibrating, repositioning, relocating, programming and activation of water meters, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) meter transmission units (MTU), valves, boxes, vaults, lids, and other related pipes and appurtenances. Theses meters and their appurtenances range in size from 5/8-inch to 36-inches.


  • Produce complete and accurate records of all the work actions performed.
  • Collect and provide manual meter reads to support billing operations.
  • Meet or exceed the minimum productivity standards for the Division.
  • Investigate, report and repair 5/8” to 2” water metering devices, and/or their associated infrastructure, in accordance with City standards.
  • Investigate reports of illegal water usage and take appropriate mechanical action at the meter location to stop this usage.
  • Assist Meter Worker II in performing 2-person tasks on metering devices that are larger than 2”, and/or their associated infrastructure.
  • Perform water service turn off and/or turn on at the meter for individual accounts.


  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and climb.
  • Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
  • Ability to travel to different sites.
  • With or without accommodation, ability to lift up to 45 pounds.
  • Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.
  • Availability to work an 8-hour shift during normal business hours, and be on standby (on call) to work outside normal business hours, as needed.
