Position Title:Retention Peer Educator

Job Description:

Under the supervision and guidance of the Early Alert Coordinator and Faculty Lead of Academic Probation the Student Success & Retention Peer Educator will conduct targeted outreach to students demonstrating academic difficulty/distress, by making phone calls and sending follow-up emails as necessary. Peer Educators will apply active listening and critical thinking skills, and direct/refer students to the support service office(s) best equipped to meet their broad needs as identified during early alert outreach calls/emails. The Student Success & Retention Peer Educators will be instrumental in providing peer-to-peer support, validating their experiences and increasing engagement of students demonstrating academic distress/difficulty with support services. These Peer Educators will also Advocate for course completion (or incompletion) as it best meets the needs of each individual student receiving an Early Alert or who are on one of the levels of Academic Standing, referring complex cases to professional staff as necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess individual needs and develop College Success Plans for all students on caseload.
  • Research and complete Educational Plans for each student on caseload.
  • Provide quarterly academic advising, inform students of degree requirements, assess and evaluate progress, recommend changes as needed.
  • Develop transfer plans, conduct transfer advising and assist with the transfer application process.
  • Provide personal guidance and support with resource referral as needed.
  • Conduct academic intervention. Work with faculty and students to interpret and strengthen academic success skills.
  • Assist with the completion of financial aid documents related to Bellevue College Financial Aid policies and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with college faculty and evaluate quarterly progress reports to determine academic needs.
  • Develop educational intervention plans as indicated. Maintain ongoing communication with students via weekly emails and quarterly meetings. Monitor and track participation in Department activities.
  • Apply federal regulations and legislation.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree. Any combination of relevant education and/or experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • One (1) year experience in Student Affairs/Student Services in a higher education setting.
  • One (1) year experience providing academic advising in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate and communicate effectively with students, staff and faculty of diverse ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability for data entry, web applications, searching the internet, and troubleshooting basic computer issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and identify solutions to potentially challenging situations.
  • Customer/student focused with the ability to build and maintain student satisfaction and relationships with services offered.
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Communication, Psychology, or related field
  • One (1) year experience providing academic advising in a community college setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of federal TRIO programs
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and oversee assigned work projects
  • Demonstrated ability to guide and assist English Language Learners
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement special programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the transfer process (Associates to Bachelor’s degree)
  • Demonstrated experience providing advising, coaching, and personal support to low-income, first generation college students
