Position Title: Criminal Investigator

Job Description:

We investigate criminality linked to immigration abuse under the Immigration Act 1971 and related legislation such as the Identity Documents Act 2010. Such offences might include facilitation, human trafficking and the use of false or fraudulently obtained documents.

In England and Wales we use powers under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) in much the same way as the police do, while in Scotland and Northern Ireland we currently rely on the Immigration Acts.

Responsibilities:

  • Collecting, preserving and recording evidence
  • Critical Incident Command (Bronze commander)
  • Mentor and coach colleagues through the completion of their PIP portfolios (OCPs) using their knowledge and skills to assist.
  • Driving official vehicles and transporting of suspects, including custodial responsibilities
  • Searching persons or property (either for health & safety or evidence)
  • Obtaining and executing search warrants
  • Conducting checks on databases and updating as required
  • Arresting suspected immigration offenders
  • Conducting PACE interviews with suspected offenders
  • Referring cases to senior grades as appropriate
  • Supporting and undertaking POCA cash seizure activity

Requirements:

  • Applicants also require a good understanding of immigration legislation and the ability to consider non-prosecution disruption methods.
  • The post holder must have previous experience of leading complex crime investigations.
  • A professional accreditation of PIP2 level is mandatory.
  • Candidates should have an all-round awareness of the specialist functions associated with complex crime investigation such as use of POCA, surveillance, exploitation of digital devices, operational planning and public protection.
  • They will have will have a comprehensive understanding (through practical application) of relevant legislation, have a proven track record in the management of proactive covert assets and be able to lead a team of investigators of varying experience.
  • Applicants should note that it is a requirement of the post that arrest and criminal investigation accreditation is achieved and maintained.
  • The successful candidates will work collaboratively across law enforcement and government; maximising the opportunity to work in partnership with others to enhance the reach and reputation of Immigration Enforcement.
  • The successful applicant will have experience of taking complex investigations to court, of working collaboratively with CPS and Counsel and have demonstrated fortitude in this pressurised environment.
