Job Description:

As the head of the Appleton Health Department, the Health Officer oversees a comprehensive program of public health and consumer protection for the community. Programs include, but are not limited to, nursing, immunology, epidemiology, environmental protection, emergency management, and weights & measures. The Health Officer also supports City policy development through Appleton’s innovative Health-in-All-Policies Ordinance and leverages the role to deepen understanding of, and shape approaches to addressing, the social determinants and root causes of public health issues. The work is performed under the general direction of the Mayor and as required by state statutes.

Responsibilities:

  • Safely operates equipment such as trucks with trailers, riding mowers, gang mowers, golf course turf equipment, tractors, loaders, skid steers, push mowers, string trimmers, etc.
  • Lift objects above shoulder height up to 50 pounds.
  • Performs facilities maintenance such as cleaning, sanitizing, sweeping, scraping, painting and sanding.
  • Performs vandalism removal on buildings, play equipment, and other areas.
  • Performs grounds maintenance such as trash and litter pickup.  Replace trash and recycling can liners.  Planting/flower bed maintenance, weeding etc.
  • Performs playground surface replacement and upkeep.
  • Performs athletic field maintenance and operation of associated equipment.  (Line Painters, Infield Groomers, etc.)

Requirements:

  • Ability to operate powered riding mowers, push mowers, string trimmers, skid steers, tractors, loaders, and pick-up trucks hauling trailers.
  • Ability to withstand a variety of temperature and weather extremes.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.  Be able to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Must provide own steel toed shoes.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
  • Must be at least eighteen years of age.
  • Ability to work irregular schedules based on project demand and weather.
