Position Title: ATTORNEY

Job Description:

The City of Houston seeks applicants for Assistant City Attorney positions in the Labor, Employment and Civil Service section of the OCA. The applicant should be an experienced practitioner within the Section’s disciplines, with at least 4 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Handling all aspects of litigation and appeals in state and federal courts.
  • Handling administrative evidentiary proceedings.
  • Managing e-discovery issues.
  • Court appearances.
  • Managing outside counsel.
  • Managing case budgets.
  • Drafting court papers, motions and briefs.
  • Conducting legal research.
  • Counseling client departments regarding employment and civil service matters.
  • Drafting, reviewing or revising city ordinances.
  • Special projects assigned by management.
  • Handling or assisting with collective bargaining.

Requirements:

  • At least 4 years of experience in labor and employment law.
  • Excellent oral advocacy skills.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Experience working with federal, state or local governmental entities.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours as needed to accommodate case load demands.
  • General understanding of federal, state and local rules relating to litigation and appeals.
  • Proficiency with the Office 365 suite of programs, including Word, Outlook, Excel and the use of technology in the practice of law.
  • Above average academic and professional achievement.
  • General understanding of constitutional law.
  • Familiarity with Equal Pay Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, and Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.
  • Familiarity with the Texas Labor Code, Texas Commission of Human Rights Act
  • Familiarity with Texas Local Government Code Chapters 143 and 174.
