Job Description:

An exciting opportunity to influence & inform policy and decision makers on some of the most significant water challenges we face, and be mentored by experienced colleagues in a team that focuses on evidence to support the management of risks that chemicals pose in the aquatic environment.We are looking for an experienced pesticide scientist to join the Strategic and Regulatory Planning Team in The Chemicals Programme of the Environment Agency. The objective of the team is to develop policies to minimise adverse environmental impacts of pesticides and other chemicals in the environment. A key aim of the team is to enable alignment of Environment Agency 2025 goals with policies for chemicals by providing evidence to support and contribute to chemicals and pesticides policy development.

Responsibilities:

  • You’ll provide advice and assurance over the management of our flood risk assets, including for our statutory reservoirs.
  • You’ll use your experience of problem solving to support assessment of the risk, urgency, and solutions to bring any below condition assets back to the required standard.
  • You’ll support our teams with internal/external partnerships, promoting sustainable solutions that improve flood risk and the environment, and help achieve our ambition to become Net Zero Carbon by 2030.
  • You will reinforce our engineering skills and resilience through mentoring and development of staff to achieve professional membership.
  • Through our national network of Catchment Engineers, you’ll contribute to national strategy and support continuous improvement, sharing learning and experience and providing peer support.

Requirements:

  • Candidates are expected to apply and develop scientific knowledge to provide sound, science-based evidence to our internal and external customers, to enhance the effectiveness of the Environment Agency.
  • Key personal skills include, Influences and persuades others; manages self; develops and maintains networks; takes decisions and solves problems; uses initiative; works well in teams; communicates effectively; engages others.
  • Experience of pesticide development, chemistry, management or regulation.
  • Understands, influences and negotiates with internal and external stakeholders. Needs to understand the audience and communicate at the right level.

  • Candidates will require a relevant degree, M.Sc. or Ph.D. or equivalent experience, such as a professional qualification or Chartered status.
  • Understanding of relevant business practices and procedures to enable management of, or planning for, delivery of effective technical and / or scientific services.
